Sept 13 (Reuters) - The family of late American pipeline billionaire George Lindemann has agreed to return 33 looted artefacts to Cambodia, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office, a decision described as "momentous" by the Southeast Asian country. In a statement it said the family's decision to return the artefacts was voluntary. Lawyers for the Lindemann family did not immediately respond to a request for comment. He said he understood the Lindemann family had paid more than $20 million for the artefacts. U.S. authorities have been spent more than a decade working on locating artefacts from Cambodia and have so far repatriated 65.

Cajamarca, Peru Reuters —Archaeologists in northern Peru have unearthed a 3,000-year-old tomb which they believe might have honored an elite religious leader in the Andean country some three millennia ago. Two seals were also found along the upper edges of the tomb, one with an anthropomorphic face looking east and another with a jaguar design facing west. Archaeologists hold pieces of pottery from the tomb, which also contained decorated ceramic bowls and seals indicating ancient ritual body paint used for people of elite standing. “Though this person is a man, the associations are very peculiar,” said Seki. Last year’s find of the “Priest of the Pututos,” however, is believed to be older.

Following a hastily convened video conference on Thursday, Beijing mayor Yin Yong stressed that close attention should be paid to investigating and rectifying fire hazards. Beijing's municipal government, as well as the provincial governments of Sichuan, Guizhou and Hainan have all called attention to fire dangers and the safe handling of liquefied gas. CNN —An ancient stone site in western France has been removed to make way for a new hardware store, sparking criticism of the local mayor. The mayor of Carnac, Olivier Lepick, insisted he adhered to the law in granting planning permission for the new Mr Bricolage hardware store. “Whether it’s little or not, [the site] has an archaeological value,” Obeltz told CNN affiliate BFMTV. “There were not archaeological remains of sufficient value to reject planning permission,” the mayor said. On Thursday, French far right politician, Marine Le Pen retweeted a link to an article by local French newspaper, Ouest France, calling the removal “deplorable” and remarking that the French state “protects neither our citizens or our heritage.”

CNN —Some 750 looted archaeological treasures have been seized from the notorious British antiquities trader Robin Symes and returned to Italy after a decades-long fight for their return, the Carabinieri art police said on Wednesday. Some of the antiquities returned to Italy from London are seen on display at Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome. The 750 repatriated items were seized from the disgraced British art dealer Robin Symes. He was often investigated but never charged for his alleged crimes despite countless attempts by Italy and Greece. The return of these 750 objects marks another success in Italy’s attempt to recover its stolen treasures.

CNN —An acclaimed theater director and playwright have been arrested in Russia and accused of “justifying terrorism” for their play about Russian women being recruited online to marry Islamic State fighters in Syria. Yevgenia Berkovich was arrested on Friday alongside the play’s author, Svetlana Petriychuk, after investigators alleged that their award-winning play “Finist, the Brave Falcon” was in violation of the law. Prosecutors argue the work “romanticizes, justifies and glorifies terrorists” as well as promoting the “ideology of radical feminism”, Russian state media TASS reported. It was staged in 2021 by Berkovich’s own company, with the support of the Union of Theater Workers of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, according to independent news website Meduza. Russia’s cultural scene has faced increased repression since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine.
